If you’re like me, you like to do a little online recon about a hiking trail or point of interest before you actually pack up the wagon and head down the road. There’s a lot of good hiking info out there and I encourage you to check out various sources, including this blog, to get the look, feel and pertinent details about a location you may be interested in visiting.
Howdy. My name is James Spiess. I’m the guy behind the Day Hiking Trails blog. On the trail, I usually go by my nickname, Big Game James. I enjoy getting out to various places of interest both on and off the hiking trail (usually with a friend or two) and reporting back to you what I find.
Aside from climbing a volcano near the Owens Valley back in my 20s and climbing the pyramid at the Chichen-Itza ruins, also in my 20s, I really didn’t start hiking until my middle years. Granted, I’ve always enjoyed poking around cool places, but it wasn’t until I joined a hiking group that I started to experience the pleasure of hiking.
Then, getting an idea from my friend Kelley, I even started a hiking group called Lazy Ass Hiking based on the idea of hiking a little slower and starting a little later. The group grew tremendously and it was a lot of fun. I also started writing about the various places and trails I had been to and eventually turned the Lazy Ass Hiking group over to a very capable fellow hiker.

I realized there were already several well written and informative hiking blogs covering the Southern California area, and I have no problem linking to them in my hike reports. But I also knew there was space for another voice in the wilderness. Especially one focused on shorter day hikes and a more relaxed hiking pace.
I hope you enjoy the site. I would love to hear from you. In fact, if you would like to contact me, just use the form on the contact page and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can, hopefully within a couple days.
Here’s to the Outdoor Nation and the many cool and interesting points of interest.
